Music Theory

     Description:

The Beginner Music Theory course covers types and classification of musical instruments, staff notation, notes, rhythms, intervals and scales, clefs, solfege and voices, chord theory, types of ensembles, and embellishments. This course explains most content students need to know to participate in their school music program.

     Structure:

This course will be two weeks long. Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays will be 1.5 hour instructional classes while on Tuesdays and Thursdays, there will be a 1 hour review class. Between the two weeks, students will be required to attend all instructional classes and at least two review classes.

     Description:

The Advanced/Intro Jazz Music Theory course covers advanced general theory topics such as ear training, eras of music, tonality/texture, transposing, types of composition, harmony and melody, and musicality. This course also covers basic jazz theory such as improvisation, types of jazz, walking bass lines, and jazz classics. This course explains some content students need to know if they are advanced music programs or in higher level music theory courses such as IB Music, AP Music Theory, or Honors Music Theory. This course also explains basic content students need to know when participating in a jazz program.

     Structure:

This course will be three weeks long. There will be two weeks of an instructional 1.5 hour class in which content will be taught and then one week to work on a project. During the third week, 1 hour classes will be held Mon-Thurs and Fri will be a student showcase.
